Dr Karen Spielman

Advocacy and Partnership Committee Chair

Dr Karen Spielman is a GP in a mixed billing General Practice in Paddington in Sydney where she has been for 20 years and has been privileged to look after the third generation of some families.

She has always also worked part time in special interest areas including youth health and eating disorders. Recently with a colleague she has established a multidisciplinary private practice specialising in the whole person care of those with eating disorders. She is also GP advisor and a research associate at InsideOut Institute at Sydney University.

What do you do to relax? 
Ummmm….. trying…. swimming, yoga, friends.
 
What is your favourite book that you are reading at the moment? 
Loving Gabor Mate’s new book “The Myth of Normal – Trauma Illness and Healing in a Toxic Culture”. It was actually written for me 😉
 
Why have you decided to join the ASPM Board?
I’m back for more inspiration time with like minded wonderful colleagues who help to keep up my passion for work and advocacy in this space. 
 
Do you have any particular interests in the Education, Collegiate Connection, or Political Advocacy agendas of the APSM?
Advocacy – recognition of GP’s role in whole person care, supporting and enhancing recognition of GP mental health skills, and care for the “missing middle”.
