Mental Health Skills Training (Level 1)

Mental Health Skills Training (Level 1)

The General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) is funded by Australian Government under Better Access initiative, administered by the RACGP, and accredits Mental Health Training, including ASPM’s Level 2 training and CPD offerings.

  • GPMHSC provides standardised frameworks and accreditation for GP training and education in mental health. They also provide resources and materials to support GPs in providing mental health services, for example integrated Mental Health Treatment Plan templates.
  • From November 2025, the Mental Health Treatment Plan item numbers are replaced with standard general practice consultation Medicare Benefit Scheme (MBS) codes (23, 26, 44, 123). Items 2700, 2701, 2715 and 2717 have been abolished.
  • ASPM provides Level 2 Focused Psychological Strategies Skills Training (FPS-ST). Level 1 training is a prerequisite.
  • Completion of ASPM’s accredited training allows GPs to be registered with Medicare as an FPS provider. Registered clinicians can provide cognitive behavioural therapy or interpersonal therapy, and administer 10 sessions to regular patients under a MHTP, and to related people under MBS item numbers (2721, 2725; 2739, 2743).
  • GPS require 6 hours of CPD each triennium to maintain FPS registration. See ASPM’s wide range of resources to self-log or join our live webinars, masterclasses and Professional Peer Reflection Groups.
